You have seen the graphic. Seven times the vitamin C of oranges. Four times the calcium of milk. Three times the potassium of bananas. It is on almost every moringa product sold.
We went and found where those numbers come from. They are real, they are from a 1999 book, and they describe fresh raw leaves measured per 100 grams. Not the dried powder in a capsule. Drying destroys roughly 90 percent of the vitamin C, and 100 grams of powder is somewhere between 100 and 200 capsules.
Run the arithmetic properly and you would need around 810 moringa capsules to match the vitamin C in one orange.
The short answer: moringa capsules are not a meaningful source of vitamins or minerals, because the doses are far too small. If you want the nutrition, you need loose powder by the spoonful. If you want the plant compounds, capsules are reasonable, but be honest with yourself that the human evidence is thin. Where the famous claims actually come from
The multipliers trace to The Miracle Tree: Moringa oleifera, published in 1999 by Lowell Fuglie for Church World Service. It is a genuine document about using moringa to address malnutrition in West Africa, and in that context the numbers were both accurate and useful.
Here is what the original actually compares, per 100 grams of fresh raw leaves:
- Vitamin C: fresh leaves around 220 mg against an orange at roughly 30 mg. Seven times. Correct.
- Calcium: fresh leaves around 440 mg against milk at 120 mg. Roughly four times. Correct.
- Potassium: fresh leaves around 259 mg against a banana at 88 mg. Roughly three times. Correct.
- Protein: the original says twice the protein of milk. The yogurt version you see everywhere is a later marketing mutation.
So the claims are not invented. Two things happened on the way to your capsule.
First, the leaves got dried. Vitamin C does not survive that. Dried moringa leaf powder contains around 17.3 mg per 100 g, down from roughly 220 mg fresh. That is a loss of about 92 percent.
Second, the serving got tiny. Those figures describe 100 grams. A moringa capsule holds 500 mg. You would need 200 capsules to reach 100 grams.
Stack both errors and a claim that was true for a bowl of fresh leaves becomes off by a factor of several hundred for a capsule.

Put plainly. To match one orange on vitamin C you would need roughly 810 capsules. To match one glass of milk on calcium, around 30 capsules. To match one banana on potassium, around 64.
This is not a criticism of any particular brand. It is arithmetic, and it applies to every moringa capsule on the market including ours.
So is moringa worthless?
No. But you have to be clear about what you are buying it for.
As a source of vitamins and minerals, a capsule is not doing anything. The numbers above settle that. Anyone selling moringa capsules on the nutrition claim is selling you a rounding error.
As a source of plant compounds, capsules are a reasonable format. Moringa leaf contains isothiocyanates, quercetin, chlorogenic acid and other polyphenols. These are active at much smaller amounts than vitamins are, which is why a capsule can plausibly deliver something here even though it cannot deliver meaningful vitamin C. Whether that translates into a benefit you can feel is the next question, and the answer is less encouraging than the marketing.
As actual food, loose powder works. A full teaspoon is about 5 grams, which is ten times a capsule. At that amount you get roughly 1.4 mg of iron and 75 to 100 mg of calcium, which starts to be worth counting. Stirred into a smoothie, moringa powder is a legitimate leafy green concentrate. What the human evidence actually shows
This is where most moringa pages get vague. Here is the current state, and it is not flattering.
The 2025 meta analysis nobody has written about
A 2025 meta analysis in Nutrients pooled nine randomised controlled trials covering 649 people, at doses ranging from 900 mg of extract up to 60 g a day of powder.
The results were null across the board. Body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, fasting glucose and systolic blood pressure all showed no reliable effect. Diastolic blood pressure was the single significant finding, and it did not survive sensitivity analysis.
Every outcome was graded very low certainty. The authors concluded that current evidence does not support consistent cardiometabolic benefits in adults.
The best positive trial
The strongest positive human study is a 2022 trial in Nutrients of 65 people with prediabetes, taking 2.4 g a day of dried leaf powder for 12 weeks. It found a favourable change in fasting glucose and long term blood sugar markers compared with placebo. The authors themselves flag that the study was underpowered.
Note the dose. 2.4 grams a day is around five 500 mg capsules. And a separate trial using 8 grams a day, more than three times that amount, found no effect at all.
The claim you should stop believing
Moringa is sold relentlessly as anti inflammatory. The same 2022 study measured actual inflammation markers in the same participants: TNF alpha, interleukin 6, interleukin 1 beta and CRP. It found no effect on any of them. The anti inflammatory story comes almost entirely from cell cultures and rodents.
The same applies to the cholesterol claims, which have been meta analysed and found null, and to the arsenic protection claim that appears on major health sites, which is rodent only.
Ironically, the best supported use is the one supplement brands mention least. Pooled data across 14 studies covering 865 participants supports moringa leaf for supporting milk production in breastfeeding mothers.
The safety issue you should know about right now
There is a live FDA investigation into salmonella in moringa leaf powder. An outbreak opened in January 2026 has reached 119 reported illnesses and 32 hospitalisations across 36 states and several territories, and the investigation was reopened in May 2026. A separate outbreak in October 2025 was traced to a single supplier in India. Several named brands have been recalled. Check the FDA pages for the current brand list before you buy or continue taking any moringa product.
This matters because of how moringa is produced. Leaves are typically dried in open air in hot climates and milled into powder without a heat kill step. That is a route for contamination that a capsule format does nothing to prevent.
The practical takeaway: with moringa, where it was grown and whether the finished batch was tested for pathogens matters more than anything on the front of the label. Ask the brand. If they cannot answer, that is your answer.
Heavy metals
A published analysis of 35 moringa products, covering teas, capsules, powders and drinks, found lead ranging from 0.001 to 24 mg per kg. That is a 24,000 fold difference between the cleanest and the dirtiest product tested. Nickel exceeded permissible limits in most samples.
Moringa is a fast growing tree that draws minerals efficiently from soil, which is exactly why it accumulates whatever else is in that soil. Independent heavy metal testing on the finished product is not a nice to have here.
Leaf, seed and root are not the same thing
Moringa marketing treats the plant as one ingredient. It is not.
- Leaf is what almost all human research used and the only part with a reasonable safety record. This is what you want.
- Seed has been studied separately, mostly in animals. It is not interchangeable with leaf.
- Root and bark should be avoided. They contain alkaloids including spirochin, and major medical centres advise against consuming them. If a product does not specify leaf, do not buy it.
Who should avoid moringa, and what it interacts with
- Pregnancy. Avoid. Memorial Sloan Kettering advises pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid moringa, with the specific concern attached to root and bark preparations. Breastfeeding is more nuanced and worth discussing with a provider, since leaf preparations have a better record there.
- Diabetes medication. The best documented interaction. Speak to your prescriber before combining.
- Prescription medications generally. Moringa has been shown to inhibit an enzyme system that processes many drugs, which can raise their levels. Worth a pharmacist conversation.
- Blood clotting. Moringa may stimulate clotting, so caution if you are at clot risk or on related medication.
- Thyroid medication. You will read that moringa affects thyroid hormones. That claim rests on a single rat study from 2000. There is no human data. Caution here is prudence rather than evidence, and you deserve to know the difference.
Rare but documented reactions include severe skin reactions and anaphylaxis. Stop and seek help if you react.
How much, and when
There is no established dose, because there is no established effect to dose for.
The trials that found anything used 2.4 g a day of powder. Most capsule products deliver a fraction of that. If you want to approximate the research, you are looking at powder rather than capsules, or several capsules a day rather than one.
Take it with food. Start low, because higher amounts of moringa commonly cause digestive upset. Give it eight to twelve weeks if you are testing it, and be honest with yourself about what you are measuring.

- Does the dose bear any relationship to the research? 2.4 g a day is the reference point.
- Does the marketing repeat the multiplier claims? If a brand tells you its capsule has seven times the vitamin C of an orange, it either has not done the arithmetic or is hoping you will not.
- Powder or capsule, and does that match your goal? Nutrition needs powder. Convenience gets capsules.
