Best Mushroom Supplement in 2026: What the Label Is Not Telling You

What changed in this update: we added the peer reviewed lab data on what is actually inside US mushroom supplements, the beta glucan reference table by species, every human lion's mane cognition trial with its real dose, the cordyceps species problem, what Cochrane found on reishi, and our own label run through the same checks.

In 2017, researchers working with the US Pharmacopeial Convention bought 19 batches of reishi supplements from Amazon and eBay and analysed what was in them.

They found detectable beta glucan, the compound most people are actually buying these products for, in only 5 of the 19. They found starch like polysaccharides in 13 of the 19. Their conclusion, published in Scientific Reports, was that quality consistency in the US market was poor.

The short answer: the best mushroom supplement tells you the fungal part (fruiting body or mycelium), names the species, discloses the dose per mushroom rather than hiding it in a blend, and states a beta glucan percentage rather than a vague polysaccharide number. Those four disclosures matter far more than how many mushrooms are on the front of the label.

Mycelium on grain versus fruiting body

This is the single most important thing to understand before you buy, and almost every page that explains it is written by someone selling one side of the argument.

A mushroom has two parts. The fruiting body is the mushroom you would recognise, the thing that grows above ground. The mycelium is the thread like network the fungus grows through its food source.

Growing fruiting bodies takes months. Growing mycelium takes weeks, and it is usually done on sterilised grain such as brown rice or oats. The commercial problem is that mycelium and grain grow through each other and cannot practically be separated. So the finished powder contains both.

How much grain are we talking about?

This has been measured, which is why the argument is settleable rather than a matter of opinion.

  • A 2025 analysis in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences compared authentic chaga against chaga mycelium fermented on grain. Authentic chaga: alpha glucan, the starch family, at 0.8 to 1.1 percent. Grain grown mycelium: 33 to 68 percent alpha glucan, with beta glucan falling to as low as 1 percent.
  • An analytical study of 167 samples filed into the FDA docket found myceliated grain samples running 34.7 to 60.4 percent alpha glucan, with beta glucan usually under 10 percent.

So when you buy a mycelium based product, a substantial share of what you are swallowing may be starch from the growing medium.

The fair counterargument, which most pages leave out

Mycelium producers do not accept that the substrate is filler. Their position is that fermentation changes the grain, that the resulting material is a food in its own right in the way tempeh or yogurt are, and that beta glucan assays are an unreliable yardstick for this kind of product.

That is a real argument and you should hear it. Our view is that it does not resolve the labelling question. If a product is 40 percent grain, the buyer should be told, and right now they usually are not.

An industry petition asking the FDA to require disclosure of the fungal part and the grain substrate has been sitting with the agency since 2023. The FDA issued an interim non response citing competing priorities and has not ruled since.

The nuance that cuts the other way

Here is where the lazy version of this argument breaks down, and knowing it will make you a better buyer.

Lion's mane contains two families of compounds of interest. Hericenones are found in the fruiting body. Erinacines are found in the mycelium. They are not the same compounds. So "fruiting body always wins" is too simple. If erinacines are what you want, they come from mycelium.

The honest rule is not that mycelium is worthless. It is that you should be told which one you are getting, and how much grain came along with it.

Beta glucan or polysaccharide? The label word that changes everything

Labels love the word polysaccharide. It sounds technical and reassuring. It is also close to meaningless.

Polysaccharide is a whole chemical class. It includes beta glucans, the fungal cell wall compounds people are buying mushrooms for. It also includes alpha glucans, which is where starch lives. A product that is half brown rice can print a genuinely high polysaccharide number that is mostly the rice.

The number that means something is beta glucan percentage, measured by an enzymatic assay that separates the two. Very few consumer labels state it. That absence tells you something.

What a good beta glucan number looks like

There is no single threshold, because it varies enormously by species. Anyone telling you to look for 30 percent or more across the board is guessing. Here are typical figures for dried fruiting body from the 167 sample analysis.

That chaga row is the one that catches people out. Because chaga is genuinely low in beta glucan, a very high claim usually means either the wrong species or a number that is measuring something else.

This table does not exist anywhere else, and it is the most useful thing on this page if focus is why you are here.

Three things follow, and no page ranking for this term says any of them.

One. The two strongest positive trials used roughly 3 grams a day of plain dried fruiting body powder. That is several times the raw material in a typical capsule, and it is a materially different substance from a concentrated extract.

Two. The extract ratio defence is weaker than it sounds. Brands argue that 1,000 mg of an 8:1 extract equals 8,000 mg of mushroom. But hericenones, the fruiting body compounds of interest for the brain, are fat soluble. A hot water extract standardised for beta glucan may contain fewer of them than the plain powder the trials actually used.

Three. Every nerve growth factor finding you have read about is from cell cultures or rodents. No human trial has ever measured it. That is not a small caveat. It is the entire mechanism the marketing rests on.

Seven of the eleven human trials had fewer than 40 participants. Six were funded or supplied by industry. Lion's mane may well do something useful. The evidence is simply nowhere near as settled as the category implies. Our focused guide is at best lion's mane supplement for focus.

Cordyceps: the species on the label cannot be in the bottle

This is the strangest open secret in the supplement aisle.

Most cordyceps products say Cordyceps sinensis. That is the wild caterpillar fungus from the Tibetan plateau. Three facts about it:

  • It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations down more than 30 percent over fifteen years.
  • It cannot be cultivated at commercial scale. Laboratory fruiting has been demonstrated. Commodity production has not.
  • It traded at over 140,000 US dollars per kilogram in Beijing in 2017, more than three times the price of gold.

So what is in a 25 dollar bottle? Usually one of two things. Either a fermented mycelium strain, often called CS-4, grown in a tank rather than harvested from a caterpillar. Or Cordyceps militaris, a completely different species that cultivates easily and is actually the better source of cordycepin, the compound most associated with cordyceps.

Neither is fraud, and C. militaris is arguably the better ingredient. But a label saying Cordyceps sinensis at a normal price is describing something that is not commercially available. Look for the fungal part and, ideally, the species actually used.

And the energy claim

Cordyceps is sold almost entirely on stamina and oxygen uptake. The trials are not kind to it. Of five controlled studies measuring maximal oxygen uptake, four found no change. One study of 20 sedentary older adults found a shift in metabolic threshold rather than aerobic capacity. The two most cited positive results both used a six mushroom blend, so any effect could belong to any of the six, and one was funded by the company selling that blend.

If you take cordyceps and feel better, that is worth something. Just know that "clinically shown to raise VO2 max" is not supported by the trial record.

Reishi: what Cochrane actually found

Reishi is the most heavily marketed mushroom for calm and sleep. Two Cochrane reviews exist and marketers cite neither.

A 2015 Cochrane review of reishi for cardiovascular risk factors pooled five trials covering 398 people. Every outcome was null. Blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass. The reviewers also noted more reported side effects in the reishi groups. Their conclusion was that the evidence does not support using reishi for these purposes.

A 2016 Cochrane review reached similarly cautious conclusions in a different area, describing the evidence quality as generally unsatisfying.

And on sleep, the claim you see most often: we could not verify a single published placebo controlled human trial with sleep as the primary outcome. The widely shared study showing reishi improving sleep through the gut microbiome was conducted entirely in mice. There is a 2026 conference abstract, but it has no journal publication, no registration, no placebo group and no funding disclosure.

People do report feeling calmer on reishi. We are not disputing anyone's experience. We are saying the research does not currently back the claim, and you deserve to know that before you pay for it. For a species by species comparison, see lion's mane versus reishi versus cordyceps.

Turkey tail and the PSK confusion

Turkey tail has the most impressive research of any mushroom in this category, and it is also the most misleading, because the research is not about supplements.

PSK, sold as Krestin, is a regulated prescription medicine in Japan. It is a specific purified protein bound polysaccharide manufactured to pharmaceutical standards and used alongside conventional treatment under medical supervision. Studies of it involve thousands of patients.

A turkey tail dietary supplement is not PSK. Different material, different manufacturing, different dose, different regulatory category, and no medical supervision. When a supplement page cites the PSK research, it is borrowing credibility from a prescription drug. We make no medical claims for turkey tail or for any mushroom, and neither should anyone else selling you one.

Proprietary blends and the ten mushroom problem

A "ten mushroom blend, 1,000 mg" sounds generous. Under US labelling rules, a proprietary blend only has to list its ingredients in descending order by weight and give one combined total. The amount of each individual mushroom never has to be disclosed.

So that 1,000 mg could be 900 mg of the cheapest species and 11 mg each of the other nine. Legally identical labels, wildly different products.

This is worth saying plainly even though we sell a ten mushroom blend ourselves. The more species crammed into a fixed total, the less of each one you get. Breadth and dose pull against each other, and a blend is a broad daily baseline rather than a clinical dose of any single mushroom. If you specifically want lion's mane at the amount used in the cognition trials, a blend is the wrong tool and a dedicated single ingredient product at a much higher dose is the right one.

Extraction: hot water, dual, or raw powder

Different compounds need different solvents, and this is genuinely settled chemistry rather than marketing.

  • Beta glucans are water soluble. Hot water extraction concentrates them and improves solubility.
  • Triterpenes are not. They need alcohol. This is the real and legitimate case for dual extraction of reishi and chaga, whose compounds of interest are fat soluble.
  • Raw powder is not inert. You will read that humans cannot digest the chitin in mushroom cell walls so powder is useless. Human gastric juice does contain chitinase. The accurate statement is that extraction concentrates and standardises, not that powder does nothing. Remember that the strongest lion's mane trials used plain powder.

How much should you take, and when?

There is no established daily requirement for functional mushrooms, so dosing follows the trials rather than any official guidance.

  • Lion's mane for cognition: the positive trials used around 3 g a day of fruiting body powder, over 8 to 16 weeks. Most products deliver far less.
  • Reishi in the fatigue research: several grams a day of a specific branded extract, in a diagnosed clinical population, not a healthy retail buyer.
  • Blends: follow the label, take them consistently, and treat them as a daily baseline rather than a targeted dose.

Timing is mostly practical. Cordyceps leaning formulas suit the morning. Reishi leaning formulas suit the evening. A balanced blend can go whenever you will actually remember it. Give any of them at least eight weeks.

Safety and who should be careful

Functional mushrooms are generally well tolerated, with mild digestive upset the most common complaint. A few real cautions:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not enough safety data. Avoid.
  • Blood thinners. Several mushrooms have been reported to affect clotting. Speak to your prescriber first.
  • Immunosuppressant medication or autoimmune conditions. These mushrooms are marketed for immune activity, which is exactly the wrong direction if you are taking medication to suppress it.
  • Chaga and kidney concerns. Chaga is high in oxalates and case reports have linked heavy chaga use to kidney injury. Avoid it if you have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones.
  • Mould allergy or sensitivity. Some people react to fungal products generally.
  • Surgery. Stop two weeks beforehand.

Note that reishi users reported more adverse events than placebo in the pooled Cochrane data. Well tolerated does not mean inert.

The label checklist

  1. Does it name the fungal part? Fruiting body or mycelium. If the label just says "mushroom", you do not know.
  2. If it is mycelium, does it disclose the grain? Almost none do. That is the single biggest gap in the category.
  3. Is a beta glucan percentage stated? Not "polysaccharides". Beta glucan.
  4. Is the dose per mushroom disclosed? Or is it hidden inside a proprietary blend total?
  5. Is the species named in Latin? And for cordyceps, does the name match what can actually be produced?
  6. Is there independent testing or a certificate of analysis? Ask. A brand that has one will send it.
  7. Does the dose bear any relationship to the research? Compare it against the trial table above.

The bottom line

Functional mushrooms are interesting, and the research is genuinely promising in places. It is also smaller, weaker and more industry funded than the wellness aisle suggests, and the biggest risk is not that the mushrooms do nothing. It is that you are buying rice flour.

Only 5 of 19 reishi products in one analysis had detectable beta glucan. Grain grown mycelium has measured up to 68 percent starch. Cordyceps labels routinely name a species that cannot be commercially produced.

So buy on disclosure. Fungal part, species, dose per mushroom, beta glucan percentage. If a brand will not tell you those four things, the number of mushrooms on the front of the bottle is decoration.

Go and look at the mushroom supplement in your cupboard. If it does not say fruiting body or mycelium anywhere, you have just learned the most important thing about it.
