Here is the uncomfortable truth about the energy supplement aisle. Almost nothing in it creates energy.
Caffeine does not give you energy. It blocks the chemical that tells your brain you are tired, which is borrowing rather than earning. B vitamins do not give you energy either, unless you were short of them. And the phrase "supports energy metabolism", which appears on nearly every label, is a regulated way of saying the nutrient is involved in a biochemical pathway. It is not a claim that you will feel more energetic.
The short answer: the supplements that reliably help fatigue are the ones correcting an actual shortfall. Iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D are the three worth testing for, and in menstruating women low iron is by far the most common and most fixable cause. Caffeine works but borrows against later. Everything else is modest at best. If you are exhausted, a blood test will tell you more than a shelf will.

What "energy" means on a supplement label
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you spend anything.
When a label says a nutrient supports energy metabolism, it is making a structure and function claim. It means the nutrient participates in the chemical process by which your body converts food into usable fuel. That is true of B vitamins, magnesium, iron and several others, and it is true whether or not you feel tired.
What it does not mean is that taking more will make you feel more energetic. Those pathways already run at full speed if you have enough of the nutrient. Adding surplus does not speed them up. It is like topping up a tank that is already full.
So the whole question becomes: are you actually short of something?
The three things genuinely worth testing
1. Iron, and specifically ferritin
This is the big one, and it is routinely missed.
Most people think of iron in terms of anaemia. But your body stores iron separately from what is circulating, and you can have depleted stores while your haemoglobin still reads normal. The test that shows stores is ferritin, and it is often not run.
A randomised controlled trial published in the BMJ took 136 women aged 18 to 55 with unexplained fatigue, low ferritin, and no anaemia. After four weeks of iron, fatigue fell by 29 percent, against 13 percent in the placebo group. The benefit concentrated in the women whose stores were lowest.
Think about who that describes. Anyone who menstruates, anyone who has been pregnant, anyone eating little red meat, anyone training hard. That is a very large group of people being sold caffeine and B vitamins for a problem that a ferritin test would identify.
Important caution: do not supplement iron speculatively. Excess iron accumulates and is genuinely harmful, and some people carry a genetic condition that causes iron overload. Get tested first, then treat what the result shows.
2. Vitamin B12
B12 deficiency causes fatigue, and correcting it resolves that fatigue. The people most at risk are those following vegan or largely plant based diets, adults over 50 whose absorption declines, anyone on long term metformin or acid reducing medication, and people with digestive conditions affecting absorption.
If you fall into one of those groups and you are tired, this is worth a test. If you do not, and you eat animal foods, B12 is unlikely to be your issue no matter how many energy drinks fortify it.
3. Vitamin D
Low vitamin D is very common, particularly in winter, at higher latitudes, in people with darker skin, and in anyone who spends most daylight hours indoors. Fatigue is among the more commonly reported symptoms of low levels.

So do B vitamins help with energy or not?
They help if you were short of them. They do very little if you were not.
This is worth stating plainly because B vitamins are the backbone of energy marketing. Every energy drink, every "energy complex", every effervescent tablet is built on B vitamins at several hundred percent of the daily value.
The biochemistry is real. B vitamins genuinely are required to convert food into usable fuel. But requirement is not the same as benefit. Once the pathway has what it needs, more does not produce more. The bright yellow urine after a high dose B complex is the surplus leaving.
Where a B complex does make sense: vegan and vegetarian diets, older adults, heavy alcohol use, certain medications, and digestive conditions. If none of those apply, a B complex is unlikely to be the reason you feel better or worse.
Caffeine: what it actually does
Caffeine is the only widely available compound that reliably produces a noticeable acute effect on alertness. It deserves credit for that, and it also deserves an honest description.
Throughout the day a molecule called adenosine accumulates in your brain. Rising adenosine is what tiredness feels like. Caffeine works by blocking the receptors adenosine binds to. The adenosine is still there. You just stop receiving the message.
Two consequences follow.
It is a loan, not income. When the caffeine clears, the accumulated adenosine binds all at once. That is the crash.
Timing matters more than dose. Caffeine has a half life of roughly five to six hours, so an afternoon coffee is still half present at bedtime. It reliably reduces deep sleep even in people who insist it does not affect them, and worse sleep produces more fatigue tomorrow. If you are tired and drinking coffee after early afternoon, you may be running a loop.
Used deliberately, in the morning, caffeine is a reasonable tool. Used to paper over sleep debt, it makes the underlying problem worse.
What about adaptogens, mushrooms and the rest?

Rhodiola, ginseng, CoQ10, creatine. Each has some supporting research, mostly modest, mostly in specific populations. None of them will resolve fatigue caused by six hours of sleep or an untreated thyroid problem.
The pattern across all of them: real but small effects, often in people who were struggling to begin with, and never large enough to substitute for the basics.
Rule these out before you buy anything
Fatigue is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Several common causes look exactly like needing a supplement and are not.
- Sleep apnea. Snoring, waking unrefreshed after a full night, a partner noticing pauses in breathing. Extremely common, frequently undiagnosed, and no supplement touches it.
- Thyroid problems. An underactive thyroid causes fatigue, cold intolerance and weight change. A simple blood test finds it.
- Anaemia. Distinct from low stores, and needs investigating rather than self treating.
- Depression and anxiety. Fatigue is a core feature of both, and both respond to treatment rather than to capsules.
- Blood sugar swings. If your tiredness peaks in the afternoon after a carbohydrate heavy lunch, that is a food pattern rather than a deficiency.
- Sleep debt. The most common cause by a distance, and the one people are least willing to accept.
- Medication side effects. Beta blockers, antihistamines and several antidepressants commonly cause tiredness.
If your fatigue is persistent, worsening, or came on suddenly, that belongs with a doctor rather than a shopping basket.
A sensible order of operations
- Count your sleep honestly for one week. Not time in bed. Actual sleep. Most people who feel tired are short, and no capsule fixes that.
- Move your last caffeine to before 2pm. Free, and it often resolves the loop within ten days.
- Get bloods done. Ask specifically for ferritin, B12, vitamin D and thyroid function. Ferritin is the one most likely to be omitted, so ask by name.
- Correct what the results show. This is where supplements genuinely work, because you are filling a real gap.
- Fix the obvious behavioural things. A protein containing breakfast, daylight in the morning, movement, and eating lunch that does not put you to sleep.
- Only then consider the optional extras. Adaptogens, mushrooms and the rest sit at the end of this list, not the beginning.
Where supplements do fit
None of this means supplements are useless. It means the useful ones are boring.
